Collaberative Design

How do you create a coherent look for a home when you have more than half a dozen design minds at work? Well, it takes a lot of meetings and a central color palette.

For the 417 Idea Home, we didn’t want to restrict interior design possibilities by handing it all  over to one person. We decided to divide the home up into sections and let several of the area’s best designers showcase their talents all while accommodating to homeowners Marc and Petie Williams (also the W in HCW—Branson Hills developers and 417 Idea Home sponsors).

For this issue, each designer was asked to pick an item that would hint at the direction they’re taking with their area of the 417 Idea Home but would not give away all the tricks up their sleeve. You’re going to have to wait for summer 2008 to see the completed projects. So, get ready to meet our designers and see the items they chose.

417 Magazine and 417 Home found a team of the brightest to build a dream home in Branson Hills. The concept is to construct a house in which subcontractors apply the latest technology, use the best products and apply the utmost creativity. We call it the 417 Idea Home. When it’s all said and done in summer 2008, Marc and Petie Williams will just call it home. For more info, visit 417homemagazine.com.

Andrea M. Deckard
Interior Designer, NCIDQ certified
A. Deckard Interiors, LLC
(3058 S. Delaware, Springfield, adeckardinteriors.com, 417-831-9300)
417 Idea Home focus: Theater and game room
Years in the design business: Nine

Item: Rouen chandelier manufactured by NULCO, $3,500
About the item: “It is a beautiful chandelier,” Deckard says. “It has this beautiful bronze metal, and the way the crystals catch the light is amazing.”
Placement: “I love that juxtaposition of using the crystals for an unexpected touch of femininity in this ultra-masculine space. The room is a wonderful mixture of Old World rusticism and elegance. This chandelier really speaks to the elements and overall feeling of the space.”
Backstory: “The design for this room really began with ideas about color. I looked at the overall palette for the home and felt that the masculine undertone was missing. This room is the game and theater room, so I felt that this was a perfect opportunity to introduce that richness. Working along those lines, led me to this fixture. The crystals are a color called Teak, which keeps it from being an overly formal crystal chandelier. The metal has a soft burnished appearance. In short, it was perfect!”
One word to describe your Idea Home room: “Handsome.”

Jeremy Carter
Design consultant
Tri-Lakes Interiors (135 S. Town Blvd., Hollister, 417-335-8494)
417 Idea Home focus: Formal living room and dining room
Number of years in the design business: Nine

Item: Antique rice jars, $999 for the large; $479 for the small
About the items: “They are hand-painted, so no two are alike,” Carter says. “I like using accessories like these in a new room to give it some age and history.”
Placement: “They’re going in the great room. To me Tuscan design is more of an old, worn look. It has some great over-sized large pieces that give the room a presence. I use a lot of old storage vessels in my designs.”
Define your style: “I am most well-known for Old World or French country looks. I’d like to say that my designs are well-traveled and are always trying to fit the client’s point of view as well as mine.”
One word to describe your Idea Home room: “I never have one word to say, so here are two: Grandly comfortable.”

Carla Drysdale
Owner of Nancy Rose Inc., and interior designer
(2716 S. Glenstone Ave., Springfield, 417-889-1370)
417 Idea Home focus: Upstairs bedroom and bathroom
Number of years in the design business: 10 (owner of Nancy Rose for six years)

Item: Shell Bowl with cast iron pedestal from J.E. Garrett, $1,585
About the item: “I love that this is hand-made and not a mass-produced design,” Drysdale says. “The lines are elegant and graceful. It is definitely a conversation piece but without being overdone.”
Placement: “I want the guest bedroom to pamper the Williams’s guests, and the bathroom is an extension of that. It is a small space, so I felt we needed a big statement in the fixtures.”
Backstory: “I saw this piece at market more than a year ago and tucked it away in memory, waiting for the perfect project. This house is it. I am thrilled that Petie likes it.”
Define your style: “I typically like lots of patterns and textures in a room and a mix of furniture pieces. This will work very well in this Mediterranean-influenced home. This room will make a statement with color and special one-of-a-kind furniture pieces.”
One word to describe your Idea Home room: “Powerful.”

Judie Pittman
Owner, Boomland Square Gifts & Home Décor (1996 W. Elm St., Ozark, 417-581-6512)
417 Idea Home focus: The foyer, along with accessorizing the laundry room, Petie’s office and the mudroom
Number of years in the design business: 14

Item: ALIOA Fields framed print Brushstroke by Edwin Douglas; Manufactured by The Ashton Company, $256.99.
About the item: “This framed print has a Mediterranean feel and incorporates all the colors Petie has chosen for her color palette,” says Pittman. “The print is great for the foyer and works well with a multitude of accessories.”
Define your style: “My personal taste is Old World/Tuscan with a little French country twist. The style is very popular in this area.”

Melissa Turpin, ASID
Member of Color Marketing Group, ASID Industry Partner, president of Springfield Design Association and president at Unique Tile
(1364 N. Kelly, Nixa, 417-725-5515)
417 Idea Home focus: Kitchen and overall home design coordinator
Number of years in the design business: 19

Item: Sonoma Mosaic custom-blend tile
About the item: “I like the color pallet, the rhomboid shape and how it is completely custom made to fit Petie’s taste,” Turpin says.
Backstory: “Petie found a stone floor medallion originated and made in Venice. We then picked up that idea and put the same style stone accents in the backsplash of the kitchen. Petie and I have very similar tastes. The day she walked in with her idea books and I looked at the photos, I knew we were going to click.”

417 Idea Home focus: The study and sitting room

Item: Maitland Smith Globe
About the item: “People of all ages are fascinated with globes,” Haik says. “This one is both beautiful and functional.”
Placement: “This globe adds a touch of elegance to any library.”
One word to describe your Idea Home room: “Distinctive.”

Backstory: “We showed this product to Petie during our first meeting together to discuss the design of her master bedroom suite,” Barber says. “She loved it, and we are excited to add this special feature to her home.”
One word to describe the Idea Home master bedroom: “Stunning.”
