Changing Your Name

Changing Your Name
Jamie Elson
You've agreed on everything until now. And boy, there have been a lot of decisions to make. What kind of music will play during the cocktail hour? What will the groomsmen wear? And how will your parents get from the church to the reception hall? A limo? Sure! Decision-making has been smooth sailing so far. But you didn't see this one coming, did you?

Ah, the changing of the bride's name. It's likely the groom never thought twice about it. Heck, he probably never thought once about it! That's just what happens when you marry a woman. She takes your name, right? But what if you're attached to your last name?

The thought of changing my last name didn't sit well with me. I'm stubborn. And I was always used to getting my way. I didn't realize how much it meant to him for me to take his name. And when I finally figured it out, I knew I had to do it. For him. But the actual doing it part was more difficult than you might think.

First of all, if you want to legally change your name, you have to visit the Social Security Administration. For those of us in Greene County, it's on Jefferson Avenue in Springfield. Before you can get a new driver's license (with your new name), you must have a new Social Security card (with your new name). Do not forget your marriage license when you show up at the Social Security Administration. That is the only way you can change your name. (I don't know how it works if as an adult you just want to change your name. Hmm.) It's a very simple procedure, and days later you will receive your new Social Security card in the mail. Next, head to the license bureau. Here you'll show them your new Social Security card and get a new driver's license.

Now, you're not done yet. There are still tons of people out there who know you by your maiden name. Credit card companies, banks (your debit cards, checks and address labels), perhaps your e-mail address, insurance companies (both auto and health) and movie rental cards. Your blood donor card, casino member cards and scuba diving certification card. Your frequent flyer card, Sam's Club member card and all your magazine subscriptions. The phone company, the cable company, City Utilities and your cell phone provider.

Whew. You're going to be a busy young lady.
