Bride Jodi Cunningham, a Springfield native, met groom Chris Phillip during a study-abroad trip, when they traveled with a group of Baylor University students to England, France, the Greek islands, Scotland and Turkey. After returning to the U.S., the couple enjoyed sushi on their official first date.

The two hit it off, and eventually Chris surprised Jodi with a proposal. Jodi thought they were going to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to celebrate her birthday weekend, but after they arrived at the condo Chris walked her out to the ocean under the stars and handed her a birthday card with a beautiful engagement ring tied inside.

The two were married on September 20, 2008 in Springfield. The ceremony was held at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, and a reception followed at the Tower Club.

The maids of honor were Maggie Hester and Kelly McComas-Renfro. Sara Ford, Courtney Scott, Lauren Cotter, Ashley Stocker and Kate Bailey were bridesmaids, and Abby and Nicki Hodges were junior bridesmaids. Kyle Phillip was the best man, and Corey Phillip, Matt McCollum, Bill McCunniff, Mark McDendrick, Josh Evans and Brian Romines were the groomsman.

Susan Sommer-Luarca painted an original oil painting of the couple live on the dance floor as a wedding gift from the bride’s parents. AM Pyrotechnics produced a fireworks display visible to guests from Hammons Tower.
